Aluminum patio doors: ‘Longevity expressed’

Aluminum patio doors are produced with an aluminum frame. Two things really make aluminum door frames stand out as a good choice.

1.            They are strong and sturdy and will likely last you for years to come

2.            They require low maintenance

Adding to the fact that it is low maintenance, it’s worthwhile to mention this material does not rust.

This is especially important to keep in mind if your patio door is installed in a coastal property.

The high salt content of the air will cause your metal accessories to rust easily over time. This is where aluminum patio doors are very handy.

The downside of this rust proof profile is that these patio doors are vulnerable to oxidation. How do you know if your patio door has oxidation? This is detectable in the form of a white residue which will sooner or later lead to pitting – the creation of small openings in the on the door. To prevent this process from taking its course, make sure to wipe the door frame with a damp towel once every two weeks. The more frequent the better.

Aluminum patio doors come in different shapes in sizes. Most doors either open inwards or are the sliding type which opens on a door track. Even though most manufacturers will closely correlate their production sizes, a common misconception is that aluminum patio doors come in standard sizes and therefore parts can be installed between different makes. This is not the case and care should be taken when you shop around for parts. From a design perspective, the most popular sliding patio door is the 4-panel and 2-panel.

The 4 panel patio doors have a total of 4 glass panels. There are 2 panels that slide and another two that are stationary. The 2 panel aluminum patio door simply consists of one fixed glass panel and another panel which slides from one side to the other.

Aluminum patio doors are relatively lightweight and easy to install. As always though, if you don’t consider yourself a formidable craftsman, it’s best to hire expert help.

All in all, these patio doors strike a very nice balance between sleek design, low maintenance and (very important) affordability. If you as homeowner are also generally strapped for time, this may be a perfect choice for you. Aluminum patio doors can withstand some neglect and is not as ‘maintenance intense’ as wood patio doors.
